Design for Diverse Populations 18’
Designer/Collection Concept
I collaborated with my peer Leonora-Grace Huynh on this collection. Our Fashion for Diverse Populations Collection serves the Asian female community that is often underrepresented in society due to their shorter height and less curvy body types. We were inspired by the bustling neon night scenes of Seoul, South Korea, which are always flooded with the latest fashion trends. We have featured metal ring details with bright pops of red and yellow against black primary garments; all of which are trending in South Korea right now. Our goal was to create garments specifically for petite Asians living in the United States. After interviewing females from this diverse community, the information we learned was that pants and skirts need to be hemmed at a shorter length, knitwear needs to be less baggy, and woven garments are often too rigid to flatter most asian body types. To address these issues, we created ready to wear garments with silhouettes that flatter a smaller bust and rear and adapted/incorporated current Asian fashion trends to suit American lifestyles. We not only wanted to create two looks specifically for the Asian female community, but cohesive and trendy garments as well. During the process of designing our garments, we kept in mind that we wanted to create a pants look and a skirt look that compliment one another, and that people would actually want to take off the dress form and walk out wearing.
